What’s the F-number of the Human Eye? https://clever-bose-386b63.netlify.app/whats-the-f-number-of-the-human-eye/ https://clever-bose-386b63.netlify.app/whats-the-f-number-of-the-human-eye/#respond Tue, 19 Jun 2012 15:58:25 +0000 http://www.frankfrankfrank.com/mass/?p=746
With all the new cameras and lens that have come out recently I was curious about the f-number of the human eye. It can easily be calculated using the human eye’s focal length (~22mm) and physical aperture size. Here’s what Wikipedia has to say:
“Computing the f-number of the human eye involves computing the physical aperture and focal length of the eye. The pupil can be as large as 6–7 mm wide open, which translates into the maximum physical aperture.
The f-number of the human eye varies from about f/8.3 in a very brightly lit place to about f/2.1 in the dark. The presented maximum f-number has been questioned, as it seems to only match the focal length that assumes outgoing light rays. According to the incoming rays of light (what we actually see), the focal length of the eye is a bit longer, resulting in minimum f-number of f/3.2.”

For me, one of the most exciting announcements at NAB was Dolby’s Atmos. Essentially what it aims to do is  ”blend onscreen visuals with enhanced audio by not limiting the sound to channels or fixed speaker locations” making it possible to fully immerse you audience, tell more of your story with well placed sound positioning, and do array pans.  Watch the video you’ll see what I’m talking about.  Or read all about it here

Zhang Huan’s imposing sculpture of Confucius, which is made of silicone, steel, carbon fiber and acrylic.  I’ve seen movie effects that look far less realistic then this.
